Why I Started “Save My Transit”

People in the DC Metro region support transit for different reasons.
Please tell your story of why transit service is important to you.

Some people rely on transit as their sole means of transportation.  Some to simply commute to work.  Other people support transit because it is good for the environment—taking cars off the road, reducing carbon emissions and our dependence on foreign oil.  Others support transit because it stimulates our local economy.

While our motivations vary, it's time to work together toward the common goal of preserving and
strengthening our transit service in the DC Metro region. This will require additional funding for both capital and operating expenses.

We’ve heard that we lack the necessary political
will in our region to secure needed funding.   Let’s change that.  And let’s start today by sharing our stories of why our transit service is important to us personally.  Click here to send your story of why transit is important to you.

Here’s My Story…

My name is Penny Everline. I live in Arlington.  I cannot drive due to a visual impairment, and I ride ART and
Metro bus and rail to work, to shopping, to appointments, to classes, and to social activities.  I grew up in a small town with no transit and moved to the DC Metro region as an adult.  I know it sounds corny, but I believe transit saved my life… or at least helped me get a life.

Before I had access to transit, I
wondered how I would be able to do the basic things—go to work, pay my rent, go shopping, meet up with friends, etc.  Now I do all of these things with great ease.  I can honestly say that Metro and the other transit providers in our region opened doors for me and, hopefully, will continue to do so.

There are many other stories out there.  Tell your story of why transit service is important to you.  To read stories click here.

A Call to All Supporters of Transit

The near $190 million
gap in Metro’s FY2011 operating budget looms.  Service cuts.  Fare increases.  Both are likely and anticipated to be severe.  But what can the average rider do about it?

Let your elected officials know today how important our region’s transit service is to you.  Urge them to act now to save our transit by signing the petition at:

Why Your Opinion Matters

The fares we pay to ride Metro rail and bus do not cover the expenses of operating Metro rail and bus service.  Each jurisdiction contributes funds to subsidize the actual cost of this service.  But even our fares and the current jurisdictional subsidies combined are no longer enough to cover the cost of providing transit service.  Metro is in the red.  And unlike most transit systems across the U.S., Metro doesn't have dedicated federal funding to provide its service.

We have data and reports to support the need for funding for our regional transit service.  But what's missing are the voices and stories of the riders.  Make your voice heard TODAY by taking 3 simple steps:

1) Sign the petition at:

2) Attend and sign up to speak at an upcoming Metro Budget Hearing.  More info at:
